NEW DELHI – India’s opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha after he admitted to a serious security failure in the recent Pahalgam attack, which left 26 civilians dead.

Top opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, slammed the administration for not ensuring security in a busy tourist area. “This was a complete collapse of intelligence and coordination,” he said.

The issue escalated after a high-level meeting, where government officials privately admitted that no police or CRPF personnel were present at the site when the attack happened. Even Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reportedly acknowledged that something had clearly gone wrong.

Political parties like AIMIM also questioned how such a popular area could be left unguarded. The tourist site was reportedly opened without proper clearance or informing security forces.

Despite the outrage, the ruling BJP has rejected calls for the governor’s resignation. However, the incident has raised serious concerns about security management in Indian-held Kashmir and added pressure on the Modi government ahead of the upcoming parliamentary session.
