ISLAMABAD: Regional tensions escalated dramatically on Sunday as the United States launched a direct strike on Iran’s underground nuclear site at Fordow, prompting retaliatory missile attacks by Iran on US military installations in the Middle East.

The Fordow nuclear facility, located deep beneath Iran’s mountainous terrain, was targeted using 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs. According to international monitors, the site sustained significant structural damage, although no nuclear contamination has been reported outside the facility.

This is one of the most substantial US military actions against Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran’s Retaliatory Response

In immediate retaliation, Iran initiated “Operation Annunciation of Victory”, launching multiple ballistic missiles targeting US positions in Qatar and Iraq. Confirmed targets include:

  • Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar
  • US military installations in Iraq

Officials in Qatar reported that the missiles were intercepted successfully, with no casualties or infrastructure damage reported as of this publication.

Simultaneously, Israel conducted airstrikes in western Iran, reportedly aiming at additional military sites. This triggered missile alerts across Israeli cities, heightening public concern.

Civilian Toll and Global Response

Iranian media reports indicate that over 400 civilians have been killed since Israeli strikes began earlier in the week. Thousands have been displaced from Tehran and surrounding areas amid fears of further escalation.

The United Nations and international observers have expressed deep concern. US officials, while defending the strike on Fordow as a defensive measure, have urged restraint and emphasized the importance of avoiding a full-scale regional conflict.

Strategic and Economic Implications

  • Strait of Hormuz at Risk: Iran’s parliament is reportedly considering closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor through which nearly one-fifth of global oil supply passes.
  • Oil Prices Surge: Global markets have responded with increased volatility, with crude oil prices spiking amid fears of supply disruption.
  • Security Advisories Issued: The US State Department has issued a high-risk travel advisory for American citizens in the region and enhanced counterterrorism alerts domestically.

Outlook

Diplomatic channels remain active, but the risk of a broader confrontation involving multiple regional actors has significantly increased. The United Nations Security Council is expected to convene an emergency session to address the unfolding crisis.
