LOS ANGELES – Acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve is preparing to film Dune Messiah, the sequel to Dune: Part Two, entirely using IMAX cameras—positioning the project to become only the second Hollywood feature shot fully in the premium large format.

Industry insiders report that the decision follows the critical and commercial success of Dune: Part Two, in which Villeneuve had already employed extensive IMAX sequences. The move underscores a growing trend among top filmmakers to prioritise immersive visual storytelling through expanded aspect ratios and high-resolution cinematic techniques.

IMAX executives have expressed optimism about the project, noting that technological improvements to the cameras—now lighter and more efficient—make full-length IMAX production increasingly viable. Villeneuve’s artistic vision and prior commitment to cinematic scale are seen as a natural fit for the capabilities of the format.

Filming is expected to begin in mid-2025, with a planned release in December 2026. The returning cast is likely to include Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Florence Pugh, continuing the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi saga.

If completed as planned, Dune Messiah would join an exclusive group of films maximising IMAX technology, further cementing Villeneuve’s reputation as a master of large-scale, visionary filmmaking.
