WASHINGTON – Former US President Donald Trump has announced a new plan to send advanced weapons to Ukraine through NATO, warning Russia of heavy economic consequences if it does not agree to a ceasefire within 50 days.

Speaking after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said the United States would provide weapons—such as Patriot air defence systems—to NATO allies, who would then transfer them to Ukraine. These systems will later be replaced by US-made equipment funded by NATO countries.

The move signals a shift in Trump’s approach, combining military support for Ukraine with a strong message to Moscow. He warned that if Russia does not commit to a ceasefire within 50 days, it will face high tariffs—potentially up to 100%—on trade, along with similar measures for any country continuing economic ties with Russia.

Trump criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, “He talks nice in the morning and then bombs people in the evening.” He also noted that relying solely on diplomacy is no longer enough.

The Ukrainian leadership welcomed the announcement, while European nations like Germany and Norway expressed support for the arrangement. Russia, however, strongly condemned the plan, calling it a provocation and accusing the US of “sponsoring terrorist groups.”

The international community now awaits Moscow’s response as tensions in the region continue to rise.
