JAKARTA – A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck offshore eastern Indonesia on Monday, but no casualties or damage have been reported.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 12:49pm local time, about 177 kilometers west of Tual in the Maluku province. It originated at a depth of 66 kilometers.

Indonesia’s geophysics agency confirmed that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat. Tremors were felt in nearby areas, but the national disaster agency reported no injuries or structural losses.

Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. However, the intermediate depth of this tremor helped minimize its surface impact.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, but officials say there is no cause for concern at this time.
