ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in response to the recent United States military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The high-level meeting is scheduled for Monday evening and will include Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership.

The NSC, Pakistan’s premier decision-making body on national security and foreign policy matters, will assess the regional implications of the US action and determine Pakistan’s position amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The development follows a phone call between Prime Minister Shehbaz and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the Prime Minister condemned the US strikes as a violation of international law. He expressed deep concern over the targeting of facilities monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency and reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran.

“Only swift diplomacy and de-escalation can prevent the region from plunging into further instability,” the Prime Minister stated during the conversation. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace and regional cooperation.

Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, who recently returned from a visit to the United States, is expected to brief the NSC on his discussions with US officials, including a reported meeting with President Donald Trump. The briefing will focus on evolving US regional strategy and its implications for Pakistan’s security and foreign policy posture.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement echoing the Prime Minister’s concerns, urging restraint from all sides and calling for immediate efforts to reduce hostilities through dialogue.

Meanwhile, Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam, thanked the Pakistani leadership for its support and cautioned that Iran reserved the right to respond to any threats against its sovereignty. He noted that, while the strikes caused limited physical damage, they marked a serious escalation that could provoke wider conflict.

President Asif Ali Zardari also weighed in, urging global leaders to prioritize diplomacy over aggression. He warned that further escalation would have far-reaching consequences for the region and beyond.

The upcoming NSC meeting is expected to frame Pakistan’s official response and shape its diplomatic engagement in the days ahead, as tensions continue to rise in the region.
