ISLAMABAD – In a major step towards digitisation, the federal government has decided to eliminate electricity meter readers across all public power distribution companies—excluding Karachi Electric—and introduce a mobile app-based self-reading system for consumers.

The initiative, approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to curb overbilling, improve transparency, and reduce operational costs in the power sector.

Under the plan, consumers will use the app titled “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” to submit their monthly meter readings by uploading a photograph. The app will be available in Urdu and four regional languages: Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi.

A soft launch will begin immediately to test technical performance, with full nationwide implementation expected after a one-month preparatory phase.

Officials confirmed that the government has approved Rs316 million for a national awareness campaign to ensure smooth adoption of the system. Savings from the removal of meter readers will be diverted towards relief for consumers and better service delivery.

The Ministry of Energy will oversee the transition and ensure data verification through backend systems linked with the new app.
