LOS ANGELES – The latest Superman film by director James Gunn has sparked strong reactions online, with many social media users accusing the movie of carrying anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian messaging.

The controversy stems from scenes depicting a fictional war between two nations—Boravia and Jarhanpur—which viewers claim closely resemble the real-world Israel-Palestine conflict. Boravia, portrayed as a powerful military force, attacks the weaker, civilian-led Jarhanpur, leading many to draw parallels with recent events in Gaza.

Several users on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) called the film “openly anti-Israel,” while others praised it for highlighting what they see as global injustices. “Superman was so openly anti-Israel and god it was so good,” one viral post read.

While the film does not directly mention Israel or Palestine, its imagery and storyline have led to widespread speculation about its political undertones. Supporters of the film argue it promotes peace, justice, and human rights, while critics accuse it of pushing a political agenda.

Director James Gunn, known for his previous work on Guardians of the Galaxy, has not confirmed any intentional reference to the Middle East. However, he previously stated that the film explores themes of power, responsibility, and moral choices in a divided world.

Despite the backlash, the movie has performed strongly at the global box office, earning $122 million in North America and $217 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

The debate continues to grow as audiences around the world weigh in on whether the film is a bold social commentary or an unnecessary politicization of a beloved superhero.
