KUALA LUMPUR – Pakistan’s national men’s hockey team advanced to the final of the FIH Hockey Nations Cup after a dramatic 3-2 victory over France in a penalty shootout, following a 3-3 draw in regulation time at the National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
France took an early lead through goals from Xavier Esmenjaud and Victor Charlet, putting Pakistan on the back foot with a 2-0 deficit. However, the Green Shirts launched a spirited comeback in the second half. Afraz Hakeem initiated the recovery with a well-executed field goal, followed by a successful drag-flick from Sufyan Khan to level the score. Muhammad Hammaduddin then capitalized on a close-range opportunity to give Pakistan a 3-2 advantage.
France equalized late in the fourth quarter through another penalty corner conversion by Charlet, sending the match into a penalty shootout.
In the high-pressure shootout, Pakistan held their nerve. Afraz Hakeem, Shahid Hannan, and Rana Waheed Ashraf all successfully converted their attempts, while goalkeeper Muneeb ur Rehman produced a crucial save to secure the win.
The victory marks a significant milestone for the national side, reflecting signs of resurgence in Pakistan hockey. Officials from the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), including President Mir Tariq Hussain Bugti and Secretary General Rana Mujahid Ali, praised the team’s fighting spirit and congratulated the players for their performance.
Pakistan will now face the winner of the second semi-final between New Zealand and South Korea in the final, scheduled for Friday. A win in the final would not only secure the Nations Cup title but also earn Pakistan a promotion to the prestigious 2025–26 FIH Hockey Pro League.
The team’s journey in the tournament has reignited hope among fans and stakeholders, with the final offering an opportunity to reestablish Pakistan’s legacy in international hockey.
