Remembering iconic singer Iqbal Bano on birth anniversary
LAHORE: Nation remembers Pakistan’s legendary singer Iqbal Bano on her birth anniversary today.
Born in Dehli in 1935, Iqbal Bano earned worldwide fame as a singer due to classical and semi-classical singing. She was known for her ghazals which she could sing in Persian language as well with the same eloquence.
Bano learnt music, including Thumri and Dadra, from Ustad Chaand Khan. After the partition of sub-continent in 1947, she moved to Pakistan and started her career from Radio Pakistan Lahore in 1950.
She sang number of melodious songs and ghazals for Pakistani films including Payal Main Geet Hain, Ulfat Ki Nai Manzil and Chhamm Chhamm Ke.
Where singing for films gave her an identity, she actually rose to fame and became an icon after singing Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s ghazal Hum Daikheingay in 1985.
Bano was awarded the Tamgha e Imtiaz (Pride of Performance) on 7 October 1974. She breathed her last in April 2009 after a brief illness but her legacy continues till today.
