KARACHI: Pakistani comedy king, Lehri aka Safeerullah Siddiqui, birth anniversary is being observed today.
Born in Kanpur, British India in 1929, Lehri shifted to Karachi where he trained to become a professional stenographer. He also made ends meet by selling hosiery in Saddar bazaar.
Lehri made a debut in film industry in 1950s with his blockbuster film Anokhi, and never looked back. The film earned him countrywide fame and made him a star overnight.
He did 225 films in his 38-years long career including Bahadur, Tum Millay Pyaar Milla, Tasveer, Saiqa and Naukar. He has the distinction of being awarded with Nigar award twelve times in his career.
He was also awarded with Pride of Performance Award by the President of Pakistan in 1996.
The legendary comedian passed away in 2012 at age 83 after a long battle with lungs and kidney diseases at Karachi’s Liaquat National Teaching Hospital.
