GILGIT: The body of an American mountaineer, who went missing last week while trying to summit a mountain amid harsh weather in northern Pakistan, has been found in Skardu.

According to details, Alex Goldfarb was trying to summit Pastore Peak in Himalayas, not far from K2, world’s second highest mountain after Mount Everest.

Pakistan Army helicopters launched a search operation to locate the US climber after contact was lost with him. His body was found later after day-long search.

He had presumably fallen from a cliff at Pastore Peak (6,209 metres) which is located near Broad Peak (8,047m) and K2 (8,611m) in the Karakoram Range.

He was accompanied by another climber Zoltan Szlanko and efforts are now underway to trace his body as well.

Earlier on Saturday, a team of ten Nepalese mountaineers made history by climbing K2 in the Himalayas, in winter season. K2 was the last of 8,000 meter mountains that had not been conquered in winter.
