SEATTLE/PASADENA – European powerhouse Inter Milan and Mexican side Monterrey have both advanced to the round of 16 at the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, following strong group-stage performances.
In Seattle, Inter beat Argentina’s River Plate 2–0 to top Group E. A late strike from Francesco Pio Esposito and a stoppage-time finish by Alessandro Bastoni sealed the win, despite a tense match that ended in post-game scuffles on the pitch. With River reduced to nine men, Inter held firm and booked a match against Fluminense in the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, in Pasadena, Monterrey made an emphatic statement with a 4–0 rout of Urawa Red Diamonds, surging to second place in the group. A trio of smart finishes—including long-range efforts from Nelson Deossa and Jesús Corona—came within eight minutes in the first half. German Berterame added the fourth late to complete the roof-raising win. Monterrey will next face Borussia Dortmund in Atlanta.
Both teams now join Germany’s Dortmund and Brazil’s Fluminense in setting up high-stakes matches as the tournament heads into its knockout stages.
