ISLAMABAD – In a bid to control rising sugar prices, the federal government has fixed the ex-mill rate of sugar at Rs165 per kilogram, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research announced on Monday.
The decision was taken after consultations with provincial governments and sugar mill owners to ensure a balance between consumer relief and industry sustainability.
Crackdown on Overpricing and Hoarding
Authorities have directed all provinces to strictly enforce the new price and take immediate action against profiteering and hoarding under existing laws.
Retail sugar prices had recently surged past Rs180 per kg, sparking public concern and prompting calls for regulatory intervention.
Monitoring to Continue
The ministry stated that the fixed rate will be reviewed periodically based on stock availability, production costs, and market dynamics.
