Justin Trudeau called for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

CANADA: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the ceasefire proposal put forward by US President Joe Biden is an opportunity for peace that “all parties must seize”.

In a post on social media, Trudeau said the proposed deal to end the onslaught on Gaza could “end the suffering” and was an opportunity to “return to a path of peace”.

“Canada has been calling for an immediate ceasefire, an urgent increase in unhindered humanitarian assistance, and the release of all hostages,” he said.

Palestine’s mission to the United Nations has written to the current president of the world body’s Security Council accusing Israel of “unabated” attacks on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) as part of a campaign to do “irreparable harm to Palestinian people”.

In a letter on Friday to the current UNSC president Pedro Comissario Afonso, Palestine’s permanent observer at the UN, Riyad Mansour, called attention to “harassment, incitement, threats and direct Israeli attacks on UNRWA”.

“Such incitement and attacks cannot go unanswered,” Mansour wrote.

“The Security Council must act immediately to bring a halt to all unlawful Israeli measures and attacks and demand a halt to all interference, incitement and threats against UNRWA and the endangerment of its staff and premises.”
