LAHORE – In a significant legal development, a Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court has granted post-arrest bail to PTI Punjab President Dr Yasmin Rashid in one of the cases connected to the May 9, 2023 unrest, which accuses her of involvement in the burning of police vehicles in Mughalpura.
The bail was approved by ATC-I Judge Manzer Ali Gill after Dr Rashid submitted surety bonds worth Rs 100,000. While this ruling marks a crucial breakthrough for the senior PTI leader, hearings on her other bail petitions in three separate May 9 cases have been adjourned until November 25, leaving several legal battles still ahead.
During proceedings, Dr Rashid’s counsel, Barrister Taimur Malik, argued that the court should maintain consistency in its approach, pointing out that similar bail relief had been extended to other senior PTI figures, including former prime minister Imran Khan and Omar Sarfraz Cheema.
Despite the latest relief, Dr Rashid remains entangled in the aftermath of the May 9 unrest. She has already been convicted in four different cases, including charges related to the attack on the Shadman Police Station. Meanwhile, the prosecution continues to build its case in other matters, with statements from several police personnel recorded and many more witnesses yet to testify.
The case remains politically charged, with the courtroom back-and-forth unfolding amid heightened public scrutiny and ongoing debate surrounding legal accountability and political targeting.
