WASHINGTON/BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to refrain from imposing unilateral trade restrictions, warning that such actions could derail the progress achieved through recent negotiations between the two global powers.
The rare phone call, described by Beijing’s state media as “positive and constructive,” focused on easing trade tensions that have weighed heavily on the global economy. Xi stressed the importance of maintaining an “open, fair, and non-discriminatory business environment” for Chinese companies operating in the United States, while also pressing for stability in future economic dealings.
President Trump, on his part, hailed the conversation as “very productive,” noting that both sides also touched upon the fate of TikTok and upcoming bilateral meetings. He confirmed plans to meet Xi at the APEC summit in South Korea and hinted at a future visit to China.
The dialogue marks a notable shift in tone, as both Washington and Beijing attempt to move away from trade hostilities that have included tariffs, protectionist barriers, and disputes over market access. While no formal agreements were announced, the exchange underlines a renewed intent to pursue diplomacy rather than confrontation.
