ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: Pakistani and World Bank leaders recently convened in Washington to affirm and expand their strategic development partnership through a newly launched program designed to accelerate economic and social progress in Pakistan.

Deepening Collaboration

Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema led a high-level dialogue with World Bank officials, including operations director Anna Bjerde and South Asia regional vice-president Martin Raiser. They discussed implementation of the newly approved Country Partnership Framework (CPF) for 2026–2035. This expansive, decade-long programme is backed by a landmark $40 billion commitment aimed at transformational development goals.
The CPF builds on a previous pledge of $20 billion, marking a historic escalation in support for Pakistan.

Strategic Priorities

Under the CPF, financing and technical assistance will target key areas such as energy sector reform, digitalisation, human capital development, climate resilience, clean water access, and private sector growth. Minister Cheema noted the partnership reflects deep confidence in Pakistan’s recovery efforts, which included measures ranging from post-pandemic recovery to advances in sustainable infrastructure following recent climate challenges.

A Vote of Confidence

The partnership framework emerged amid Pakistan’s economic rebound—characterised by stabilising inflation and improved foreign reserves. The World Bank affirmed its commitment, emphasising that sustained policy reforms and an improved business environment are essential to translate short-term gains into long-term prosperity.

What’s Ahead

Coming months will focus on finalising the implementation roadmaps while rolling out supporting funding, including over $700 million earmarked for mining and energy projects. As Pakistan shifts into the execution phase, the success of this multi-billion-dollar initiative will hinge on timely reforms and effective governance.
