PESHAWAR / MURREE — Fresh snowfall has blanketed parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the hill resort of Murree, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and disrupting daily life, while weather authorities warn that another spell of rain and snow is expected later this month.
According to the Met Office, light to moderate snowfall was reported in several mountainous areas, including upper KP districts, while Murree experienced icy conditions as temperatures dipped below freezing overnight. The snowfall transformed landscapes into winter scenes but also raised concerns over road safety and accessibility.
More Rain and Snow Forecast
Weather officials said a new weather system is likely to enter northern regions between January 25 and 27, bringing additional rain to plains and snowfall to higher elevations. Authorities cautioned that the fresh spell could worsen travel conditions and increase the risk of landslides in vulnerable areas.
Residents and tourists in Murree have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours and to follow official advisories to prevent accidents and congestion.
Cold Wave Impacts Daily Life
The cold spell has led to school attendance issues in some high-altitude regions, while local administrations have activated emergency response measures to assist stranded travellers and residents. Power outages were also reported in remote areas due to snow accumulation on transmission lines.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers and hotel owners in tourist areas reported mixed reactions, with snowfall boosting visitor interest but logistical challenges affecting operations.
Authorities on Alert
Provincial disaster management officials said relevant departments are on standby to respond to emergencies, including road blockages and medical needs. Snow-clearing machinery has been deployed in key areas to maintain access where possible.
As winter intensifies across northern Pakistan, authorities urged the public to remain cautious and prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
