NEW ZEALAND – Kane Williamson remains dedicated to representing New Zealand in international cricket, according to newly appointed head coach Rob Walter, despite the veteran batter opting out of the upcoming tour to Zimbabwe and declining a central contract for the 2024-25 season.
The 34-year-old has chosen to prioritise franchise cricket in the short term, including his captaincy role in The Hundred with London Spirit. His absence from the two-Test series in Bulawayo, scheduled for later this month, had sparked speculation over his long-term future with the national team.
Addressing the concerns, Coach Walter stated that Williamson is still committed to the Black Caps and intends to play for New Zealand when the timing aligns. “He remains passionate about international cricket, and it won’t be long before we see him back in the side,” said Walter.
Williamson, who stepped down from the national captaincy and central contract list earlier, continues to be viewed as a pivotal figure in New Zealand’s cricketing structure. Team management believes his experience and adaptability across formats make him an essential asset, particularly as the side prepares for a packed calendar that includes tours of Australia, England, and the West Indies.
Walter also noted that the team is open to flexible arrangements, allowing senior players like Williamson to balance international and franchise commitments, while still contributing meaningfully to the national cause.
