ISLAMABAD – In a major boost to Pakistan’s aviation sector, the runway reconstruction project at Quetta International Airport has received the FIDIC Asia-Pacific Award for Engineering Excellence during the prestigious regional conference held in the capital from July 15–17.
The award-winning project features Pakistan’s longest and largest rigid runway, constructed seamlessly on an operational joint civilian-military airfield. Notably, the entire effort was delivered with zero safety incidents, no disruption to airport operations, and zero financial claims, at an estimated cost of PKR 5 billion.
The new runway became operational with the landing of flight PK‑3250 from Islamabad on May 31, 2023.
According to FIDIC officials, the project stood out for its technical execution, stakeholder coordination, and an unwavering commitment to safety and efficiency. The recognition extends to both the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) and its project consultants.
In a further show of international confidence, FIDIC’s Asia-Pacific advisor Palomino Elvira has invited PAA to present the Quetta runway initiative as a global case study at upcoming conferences in South Africa and France later this year.
