CHATTOGRAM – Bangladesh: Tensions flared on Wednesday as a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) rally in Chattogram was attacked by unidentified gunmen, leaving one person dead and two others, including a candidate, critically injured.
Witnesses reported that the attackers opened fire on the crowd moments after the rally began, sparking panic among participants. The assailants reportedly fled the scene before law enforcement could arrive.
Police confirmed an investigation has been launched, while the BNP condemned the attack as an attempt to intimidate the opposition ahead of the upcoming national elections. Party leaders have urged authorities to ensure security for all political gatherings and hold those responsible accountable.
Observers warn the incident reflects growing political volatility in the lead-up to the polls, with fears that further violence could derail the already fragile campaign environment.
