ISLAMABAD – New research indicates that a diet abundant in vegetables and fruits could play a meaningful role in improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia symptoms.
Nutrition scientists tracked sleep patterns and diet habits of several hundred adults over a three-month period. Those who incorporated at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily reported falling asleep faster, waking less at night, and feeling more refreshed by morning.
Health experts attribute this improvement to the natural nutrients and antioxidants found in produce—such as vitamins B, C, magnesium, and potassium—which may help regulate mood and calm an overactive mind before sleep.
Some participants also reported reduced anxiety and stress after adopting a plant-rich diet. Improved digestion and hydration levels were added benefits linked to eating whole foods rather than processed snacks—factors that can influence sleep quality.
While researchers emphasise that diet alone cannot replace professional treatment for chronic sleep disorders, they recommend adding more vegetables and fruit to evening meals as a natural aid. Simple steps like having a banana before bed, incorporating leafy greens into dinner, or blending fruit smoothies may offer gradual improvements in sleep duration and depth.
Sleep specialists suggest combining nutritional changes with good sleep hygiene—such as consistent bedtimes, screen-free hours before rest, and a cool, dark bedroom environment—for best results.
