WASHINGTON – The United States government has announced it will end the automatic extension of work permits for immigrants, a move expected to affect thousands of foreign workers awaiting renewal approvals.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that individuals who apply to renew their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) will no longer be allowed to continue working automatically once their current permit expires. Previously, the policy granted up to 540 days of continued work authorization during the renewal process.
The change will impact a wide range of non-citizen workers, including those on temporary visas and employment-based categories. Only limited exceptions, such as certain Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, will retain the automatic extension benefit.
According to officials, the decision aims to ensure stricter compliance and security checks within the immigration system. However, immigrant advocates have warned that the move could cause job disruptions and financial hardship for thousands of applicants facing long processing delays.
The policy is set to take effect later this year, marking a significant shift in the Biden administration’s approach to immigration and employment authorization procedures.
