ALLAHABAD: Renowned Urdu critic and theorist Shamsur Rahman Faruqi passed away of COVID-19 related complications in his hometown of Allahabad, India.
Faruqi was the editor and founder of the Urdu magazine Shabkhoon, and was credited for the revival of dastaangoi in India. He also translated numerous works into Urdu.
Faruqi, 85, was infected with the novel coronavirus in November. Despite having recovered from COVID-19, Faruqi developed complications including the lethal fungal infection, mucor mycosis, to which he lost an eye.
Faruqi passed away early on Friday morning in Allahabad, his hometown, where he had returned after getting treated in New Delhi.
