New York, United States — Several countries at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have raised serious concerns over the potential forced displacement of Palestinians following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, warning that the development could have dangerous humanitarian and geopolitical consequences. The issue was discussed during a UNSC session amid growing international unease over the broader implications of the move.
Addressing the council, Pakistan cautioned that Israel’s decision cannot be viewed in isolation, particularly in light of earlier statements and reports suggesting Somaliland as a possible destination for relocating Palestinians, especially those from Gaza. Pakistan’s representative stressed that any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians would constitute a clear violation of international law and undermine efforts toward a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
The Pakistani delegation reaffirmed Islamabad’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, calling for a peaceful resolution based on international legitimacy and UN resolutions. At the same time, Pakistan strongly backed Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, terming the recognition of Somaliland as inconsistent with international norms and an infringement on Somalia’s territorial framework.
Other countries echoed similar concerns, warning that Israel’s move could fuel instability not only in the Middle East but also in the Horn of Africa. Representatives cautioned against any steps that might legitimise separatist entities or pave the way for demographic engineering, including the relocation of civilian populations under coercive circumstances.
Somalia’s envoy to the UN also addressed the council, reiterating that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and that unilateral recognition threatens regional peace and stability. Several UNSC members emphasised that any recognition of breakaway regions without the consent of the parent state contradicts the UN Charter and long-standing international principles.
While Israel defended its decision as a sovereign diplomatic choice, the debate at the UNSC highlighted widening global concern over the potential fallout, particularly regarding the humanitarian situation of Palestinians. Observers note that the issue is likely to remain under close international scrutiny as tensions continue to rise across multiple regions.
