Islamabad – Pakistan – The United Nations has inaugurated the Pakistan United Nations Network on Migration (UNNM) to strengthen migration governance and address challenges related to human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The launch, held in Islamabad, was led by UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Yahya and aims to foster a collaborative, unified approach to migration management in the country.
The initiative aligns with international frameworks, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM). The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) will coordinate the network, with the UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan serving as chair.
Coinciding with the launch of the UNNM, Pakistan also inaugurated its first Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund Programme (MMPTF). This programme seeks to combat trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants, working jointly with the IOM, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Government of Pakistan, the private sector, media, and civil society.
These initiatives reflect Pakistan’s commitment to a comprehensive approach to migration governance. By integrating migration policies into broader development objectives, the UNNM and MMPTF aim to ensure safe, orderly, and regular migration while protecting the rights of all individuals.
