New York — The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a Pakistan-backed resolution reaffirming the universal right of peoples to self-determination, marking a significant diplomatic development and reinforcing global commitment to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
The resolution, titled “Universal Realisation of the Right of Peoples to Self-Determination,” was adopted by consensus during the UN General Assembly session at the United Nations headquarters, reflecting broad international support without the need for a formal vote.
Addressing the Assembly, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN emphasised that the right to self-determination remains a fundamental and inalienable right, and that its continued denial is a major source of conflict, instability and human rights violations in different parts of the world. He stressed that the international community has a collective responsibility to ensure the implementation of this principle in letter and spirit.
The resolution reiterates that peoples living under colonial, foreign or alien occupation must be allowed to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social and cultural development. It also calls upon states to refrain from actions that suppress or violate this right, including military occupation, repression and discriminatory policies.
Diplomatic sources said the adoption of the resolution by consensus highlights sustained international recognition of unresolved self-determination disputes. The text draws attention to situations where people continue to be denied their legitimate rights in contravention of international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The resolution further underscores the importance of respecting human rights, ending unlawful occupation, and resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with the UN Charter. Observers view the move as part of Pakistan’s broader diplomatic efforts to keep the issue of self-determination firmly on the global agenda.
The adoption comes at a time when global attention remains focused on long-standing conflicts and occupied territories, reinforcing the United Nations’ commitment to decolonisation and justice for oppressed peoples worldwide.
