LONDON – United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed his government’s intention to address illegal migration through small boat crossings, as part of a broader domestic and foreign policy agenda. The announcement comes alongside preparations for a state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron later this year.

Starmer, who assumed office following a Labour Party victory, stated that curbing illegal migration remains a top priority. He emphasised the need for a “new approach” rooted in practical solutions rather than rhetoric, and signalled closer cooperation with European partners, particularly France, on border security and immigration enforcement.

In related developments, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that President Emmanuel Macron will undertake a formal state visit to the United Kingdom in the coming months. The visit, aimed at strengthening UK-France ties post-Brexit, will include meetings with the King and key government officials.

The UK government has also committed to reviewing its existing asylum policies and plans to initiate talks with European counterparts to develop a joint framework for managing cross-channel migration.

Observers view the Macron visit as a symbolic step towards repairing diplomatic ties strained in recent years, while the new migration strategy is expected to face scrutiny from both human rights groups and political opposition.
