UNITED KINGDOM – The British government has announced a fresh initiative offering grants of up to £3,750 to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), as part of its broader strategy to accelerate the country’s transition to cleaner transport.
The scheme, revealed by the Department for Transport, is targeted at middle-income families and businesses looking to switch to battery-powered cars. The grants will be available for vehicles priced under £32,000, with the aim of making EVs more accessible to a wider section of the public.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper stated that the new incentives are designed to support the government’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions, while stimulating economic activity in the green automotive sector. “This package will not only help more people make the switch but also reinforce the UK’s commitment to environmental leadership,” he said.
Industry experts welcomed the move but noted that further investment in charging infrastructure remains essential. Currently, the UK’s EV adoption rate is growing, but affordability and charging access have been persistent concerns for many potential buyers.
The latest grant replaces the previous Plug-in Car Grant, which was withdrawn in 2022, and signals a renewed governmental focus on sustainable mobility amid rising fuel costs and climate challenges.
