WASHINGTON, USA – Former US President Donald Trump has intensified economic pressure on India, escalating tensions over trade and energy ties. The move comes as part of Trump’s renewed demand that New Delhi halt crude oil imports from Russia.
Trump’s administration has raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, accusing India of indirectly supporting Moscow’s war in Ukraine by continuing to purchase discounted Russian oil. While energy is at the core of the dispute, experts believe the clash reflects a deeper struggle over strategic independence and global influence.
India, on the other hand, sees the pressure as an attempt to curb its growing autonomy on the world stage. With strong defence and diplomatic ties to Russia, New Delhi remains defiant, signalling that it won’t be dictated by Washington’s foreign policy agenda.
The trade standoff also includes US objections to India’s protectionist policies. Trump has criticized India’s high tariffs on American agricultural and dairy products, pushing for “reciprocal measures” if Delhi doesn’t comply.
Despite shared concerns over China, the crisis is threatening what was once seen as a reliable partnership. Experts are calling it the worst rift in US-India relations in over two decades.
