WASHINGTON – Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will impose a substantial increase in tariffs on Indian imports within the next 24 hours, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil despite U.S. pressure to reduce such transactions.
Trump, speaking during a press briefing, accused India of undermining American economic and strategic interests by maintaining strong trade ties with Moscow. He warned that the United States would respond with “very substantial” tariffs targeting key Indian exports, including steel, aluminum, and consumer goods.
The statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, as the U.S. has repeatedly cautioned its allies and partners against strengthening economic relations with Russia since the start of the Ukraine conflict. Analysts note that India has maintained a balanced foreign policy, continuing energy imports from Russia to meet domestic demand while also expanding trade with the West.
Indian officials have not yet issued a formal response, but sources indicate that New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation and may seek diplomatic engagement to avert a trade confrontation.
Economists warn that steep tariffs could strain the $200‑billion annual trade relationship between the two countries, affecting industries on both sides. The move also signals Trump’s continued emphasis on aggressive trade policies as part of his broader political agenda.
