WASHINGTON/TOKYO – In a major economic development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a “massive” trade agreement with Japan, marking a key breakthrough in bilateral relations. The deal, which Trump claims will benefit American workers and manufacturers, includes tariff reductions and market access expansions for both sides.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba cautiously welcomed the announcement, calling it “a step forward” while noting that the finer details are still under review. The agreement is expected to boost Japanese investment in the U.S. and give American exports, including autos and agricultural products, greater access to Japanese markets.
Following the announcement, Japan’s Nikkei index surged over 3%, and shares of major automakers saw sharp gains. Meanwhile, U.S. auto producers expressed concern over possible disadvantages due to lower tariffs for Japanese vehicles.
