Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines in response to what he called “provocative and foolish” comments made by Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.
The announcement was made by Trump through his social media platform Truth Social, where he stated that the submarines were being positioned in “appropriate regions” following Medvedev’s statements about potential nuclear retaliation against the West.
“Words are very important, especially when they come from someone in power. They can have unintended consequences,” Trump said. He warned that such rhetoric from Russian officials could dangerously escalate global tensions.
Medvedev had recently responded to U.S. calls for a Ukrainian ceasefire with sharp criticism, hinting at Russia’s readiness to use nuclear deterrence mechanisms in retaliation to what he described as “Western threats.” His remarks referenced Russia’s Cold War-era “Dead Hand” nuclear system, which automatically launches a retaliatory strike in case of a first attack on Russia.
While the U.S. government has not officially commented on the specifics of submarine deployments, Trump’s public statement marks a rare direct acknowledgement of nuclear force positioning, typically kept classified under national security protocols.
Military analysts suggest the deployment may be symbolic but is intended to send a strong message to Moscow amid rising tensions over the prolonged war in Ukraine.
The geopolitical climate remains fragile as world leaders urge restraint. However, Trump’s assertive response is likely to sharpen the rhetoric between Washington and Moscow in the weeks ahead.
