WASHINGTON D.C. – Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that India will face a 25 percent tariff on imports effective August 1 if it continues to purchase energy from Russia. The move also includes punitive measures targeting third-party countries that facilitate such transactions.
Trump explained that India’s ongoing energy dealings with Russia undermine U.S. policy objectives and provide significant revenue to support Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine. He asserted that the new tariffs aim to pressure India into reducing its reliance on Russian oil and gas.
The policy stipulates that goods imported from India—including key products such as electronics, textiles, and pharmaceuticals—will be hit by the tariff if energy purchases continue. While the tariff focus is binary—transaction-based—the administration clarified it will not penalize India’s broader trade unless compliance remains low.
The announcement signals a tougher U.S. posture toward global partners trading with Russia. Washington insisted the measures are a direct response to actions benefiting Russia and not aimed at harming India’s overall trade relationship.
