LAHORE – Authorities in Punjab have evacuated thousands of residents from areas along the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers as water levels rise to exceptionally high levels following the release of water from India’s dams.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that flood conditions are likely to persist, with rivers expected to remain at very high to exceptionally high levels. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that over 210,000 people have been relocated from flood-prone districts, including Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, and Narowal.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with the Pakistan Army deployed in eight districts to assist with evacuations and relief efforts. Meanwhile, the PMD has also issued flood alerts for parts of Sindh, anticipating very high levels in Guddu and Sukkur barrages over the coming days.
Recent rainfall has broken a 49-year record in Sialkot, and additional showers are forecast across Punjab. Climate experts have described the current situation as unprecedented, noting that water levels in the eastern rivers are unusually high. Authorities remain vigilant, urging residents to adhere strictly to evacuation orders to ensure their safety.
