BANGKOK – — In a sharp escalation of long-standing border tensions, Thailand has launched a series of air strikes targeting Cambodian military positions after deadly clashes reignited along the disputed frontier.
According to official statements from the Thai military, the confrontation began when Cambodian forces allegedly opened fire near Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province, killing one Thai soldier and injuring four others. In retaliation, Thai forces deployed aircraft to strike what they described as “active military threats” across multiple points along the border.
Cambodia, meanwhile, has rejected these claims, accusing Thailand of initiating “dawn attacks” without provocation. Cambodian defence officials insist their troops refrained from retaliating, despite what they termed as “continuous aggression” from the Thai side.
The conflicting narratives have further muddled the already sensitive situation, raising concerns about whether this latest flare-up could unravel the fragile peace created after a recently negotiated ceasefire. International observers fear that renewed violence may once again displace border communities and destabilise the broader Southeast Asian region.
Analysts warn that if diplomatic efforts fail to contain the situation, the dispute — rooted in decades of territorial disagreements — could spiral into a wider conflict. With both nations trading accusations and increasing their military readiness, hopes for immediate de-escalation appear uncertain.
