MUMBAI – Tesla has officially entered the Indian market by opening its first showroom in Mumbai and launching the much-anticipated Model Y SUV, priced at a hefty ₹60 lakh (approximately $70,000).
The Model Y, Tesla’s best-selling electric SUV, will be available in two versions: a standard variant with a 500 km range and a long-range model offering up to 622 km per charge. Bookings are now open with a refundable deposit of ₹22,220, and deliveries are expected to begin later this year.
Despite strong interest, Tesla’s entry is clearly targeted at high-end buyers, as the car remains out of reach for most Indians due to import duties and premium pricing.
The launch comes after years of delays and negotiations with the Indian government over tax policies and local manufacturing. So far, Tesla has not committed to setting up a factory in India, but its presence is expected to boost awareness and demand for electric vehicles in the country.
Experts say Tesla’s entry may push other global and local automakers to step up their EV game, potentially leading to better infrastructure and more competitive prices in the future.
