ISLAMABAD: A new report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has forecast a dramatic shift in global labour markets as emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, advanced energy systems, and sensor networks begin reshaping industries that employ the majority of the world’s workforce.
According to the report Jobs of Tomorrow: Technology and the Future of the World’s Largest Workforces, nearly 80 percent of the global labour force — engaged in sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, construction, trade, transport, business management, and healthcare — will experience significant transformation in the coming years due to rapid technological adoption.
The study highlights how AI and robotics are set to boost productivity but also redefine job roles, while renewable energy and storage systems will stabilise work conditions in power-dependent industries. Additionally, sensor networks are expected to revolutionise efficiency in logistics, healthcare, and agriculture through smarter monitoring and predictive maintenance.
Real-world examples already show this transition taking place — from automated construction machinery and AI-driven diagnostics to drone deliveries and solar-powered work systems across developing nations. However, the WEF cautions that the benefits of these innovations may not be evenly distributed, urging governments to prioritise inclusive access, skills training, and strategic investment to prevent large-scale displacement.
The report stresses that the next few years will be pivotal in determining whether this wave of automation strengthens global economies or widens inequalities.
