ISLAMABAD – Authorities have issued an urgent warning for communities living along the Indus River downstream of Tarbela Dam, as the dam’s spillways will be opened today at 2:30pm, releasing a large volume of water.
According to official sources, 160,000 to 260,000 cusecs of water will be discharged from the dam. This move is expected to cause a sudden rise in river levels, prompting safety alerts in low-lying areas.
Public Urged to Take Precaution
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has advised locals to avoid riversides, canals, and low-lying areas. Fishermen, children, tourists, and livestock owners have been specifically told to stay clear of the water to avoid accidents.
Monsoon Rains Add to Risk
The alert comes as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast moderate to heavy monsoon rains beginning July 13. These rains could further raise water levels in the Indus, Kabul, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers, increasing the threat of flooding.
Local administrations have been instructed to stay on high alert and ensure the public is informed and protected.
