TOKYO – Excitement is building in gaming circles as leaks suggest Sony’s much-anticipated PlayStation 6 (PS6) handheld—codenamed “Canis”—is shaping up to outperform the upcoming Xbox ROG Ally X while remaining cost-competitive.
Alleged specifications point to a powerful AMD “Canis” APU featuring six CPU cores (four high-performance, two low-power) and 16 RDNA 5 GPU compute units. The handheld is expected to offer between 24GB and 36GB of LPDDR5X RAM, putting it ahead of most current portable gaming PCs.
One standout feature is its dockable design, similar to the Nintendo Switch. When docked, the handheld is said to boost its processor speed from approximately 1.20 GHz to around 1.65 GHz—potentially delivering nearly 2.6 times better ray tracing performance compared to a PS5.
Pricing is rumored to fall in the $400–$500 range, significantly undercutting expectations for the ROG Xbox Ally X, which may cost well over $700. Analysts believe this pricing strategy could attract PlayStation fans hesitant to invest in higher-priced hardware.
Sony has not confirmed these reports, and the PS6 handheld is not expected to launch before 2027. Still, if accurate, these specs suggest it could represent a formidable entrant in the handheld gaming market.
