LOS ANGELES, United States:
Rap legend Snoop Dogg has stepped forward to address the controversy surrounding his recent comments about the LGBTQ+ representation in Pixar’s animated film Lightyear. The uproar began after Snoop expressed discomfort with a scene featuring a same-gender couple, a moment he admitted left him speechless when watching the movie with his grandson.
During an appearance on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop recounted the incident, saying his grandson innocently asked, “Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman.” The rapper revealed he was unprepared to answer, admitting, “I just came to watch the movie, and suddenly I was in the middle of something I didn’t have answers for.”
The remarks quickly sparked criticism across social media, with many accusing Snoop of being insensitive or out of touch. LGBTQ+ advocates and media personalities, including T.S. Madison, questioned the rapper’s double standards, pointing out his comfort with similar portrayals in his own music videos while criticizing a children’s film.
In response to the backlash, Snoop issued an apology on Instagram, clarifying that he had no malicious intent. “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” he wrote. “All my gay friends know what’s up — they’ve been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old… Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”
Meanwhile, Lightyear writer Lauren Gunderson defended the inclusion of the same-gender couple in the film, calling it a meaningful step toward authentic representation. “It may seem like a small detail, but representation matters. Seeing love in its many forms can inspire acceptance and understanding,” she shared.
The debate has reignited conversations about inclusivity in children’s media and the need for open dialogue between generations. Snoop’s apology has been widely acknowledged, but the incident continues to fuel discussions on how media portrays diversity and how families navigate these conversations.
