KARACHI – Sindh has confirmed its first dengue-related death of 2025, as health authorities continue to monitor the spread of the mosquito-borne virus across the province. A 24-year-old man, admitted to the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital, succumbed to complications after his platelet count dropped to a dangerously low level of 32,000.
According to data released by the Sindh Health Department, a total of 295 dengue cases have been reported in the province so far this year. Karachi remains the most affected region, accounting for 260 cases, followed by Hyderabad (30), Mirpurkhas (2), Sukkur (2), and Shaheed Benazirabad (1).
Sharp Decline in Yearly Infections
Despite the fatality, officials noted that the number of reported cases in 2025 remains significantly lower than previous years:
- 2022: 23,274 cases
- 2023: 2,880 cases
- 2024: 2,704 cases
- 2025 (to date): 295 cases
Health experts attribute the decline to improved surveillance, awareness campaigns, and preventive measures. However, authorities remain on alert as the monsoon season approaches—typically a high-risk period for dengue outbreaks.
Health Department Issues Advisory
In light of the fatality, the provincial health department has urged citizens to take precautionary steps, including:
- Eliminating standing water from residential and commercial areas
- Using mosquito repellents and protective nets
- Seeking immediate medical attention upon experiencing symptoms such as high fever, headache, and joint pain
Officials warned that while the current situation is under control, public cooperation is vital to prevent a resurgence of the virus.
