Karachi – A large-scale anti-polio campaign has been launched across Sindh, aiming to vaccinate 8.9 million children under the age of five. The drive, scheduled from September 1 to 7, focuses on 25 high-risk districts, including riverine, Katcha, and underserved urban areas. Over 70,000 trained frontline workers are conducting door-to-door vaccinations, supported by more than 20,000 law enforcement personnel to ensure safety and smooth operations.
Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal highlighted concerns over rising polio cases and noted the high refusal rate in Karachi, where 27,000 parents have declined the vaccine for their children. He stressed the urgency of vaccination, pointing out that while diseases like cancer have treatments, polio can lead to lifelong paralysis. Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho called for increased community cooperation, particularly in mobile and underserved populations, to protect children from the virus.
