KARACHI – In the aftermath of recent building collapses, the Sindh government has announced a three-month rent assistance package for families displaced by the demolition of 54 dilapidated and dangerous buildings across Karachi, particularly in the Lyari area.
The decision was confirmed by Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, who stated that the move aims to provide immediate relief to both owners and tenants affected by the anti-encroachment and safety operations being carried out in vulnerable neighbourhoods.
Support for Affected Families
Minister Ghani said the rent compensation period could be extended up to six months or more, depending on the rehabilitation needs of each displaced family. He also assured that no household would be left without assistance.
A dedicated oversight committee has been established to monitor the disbursement process and ensure fair treatment for all families.
Helpline for Complaints
To further facilitate affected residents, the Governor House has set up a helpline service for complaints and support:
- Dial 1366 or 021‑99204748 for assistance regarding displacement or pending support.
Demolitions Follow Lyari Tragedy
The demolition drive was accelerated following the tragic building collapse in Lyari, which claimed 27 lives. The incident prompted immediate inspections and evacuation of multiple aging structures deemed structurally unsafe.
So far, 54 buildings have been demolished, with further evaluations underway in other old city zones.
Political Response
In the Sindh Assembly, PTI lawmakers have demanded an independent investigation into the Lyari collapse and called for accountability of negligent officials. They also pushed for stricter enforcement of building codes and urban planning regulations to prevent future tragedies.
Looking Ahead
The Sindh government says it remains committed to ensuring safety and shelter for displaced citizens while continuing its crackdown on illegal and unsafe buildings. Authorities have pledged transparent relief distribution and a longer-term urban housing plan for affected communities.
