CHITRAL – The iconic Shandur Polo Festival commenced on Thursday at the world’s highest polo ground, drawing sports enthusiasts, tourists, and cultural aficionados from across Pakistan and abroad.

Held at Shandur Top, located at an altitude of approximately 12,500 feet above sea level, the festival spans three days from June 20 to 22 and features traditional freestyle polo matches between teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.

The event is jointly organized by the governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, with support from the Pakistan Army, local district administrations, tourism departments, police, and Scouts. Four teams each from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral will compete in fiercely contested matches on the historic plateau.

This year’s edition was scheduled earlier than the usual July timeline out of respect for the upcoming Islamic month of Muharram. Despite the date change, excitement remains high as preparations have been completed to host thousands of visitors in the rugged, scenic terrain.

Beyond the sporting action, the festival showcases regional culture through folk music, traditional dances, artisan stalls, and local cuisine. Recreational activities including paragliding, angling, and sightseeing treks are also available, enhancing the appeal of the three-day celebration.

Security and logistical arrangements have been finalized to ensure a safe and smooth experience for all attendees. Tourism authorities expect a significant turnout, highlighting the festival’s growing reputation as one of Pakistan’s premier cultural and sports events.

The Shandur Polo Festival not only honors centuries-old traditions but also acts as a symbol of unity and heritage, bridging communities through the shared love of polo and cultural pride.
