PESHAWAR – Former Prime Minister and head of Awam Pakistan Party (APP), Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, on Sunday delivered a strong message against the use of force, saying that war is never the solution to Pakistan’s regional or domestic challenges. He called for responsible dialogue, political engagement, and adherence to constitutional principles to address the complex issues facing the country.
- Speaking at the Peshawar Press Club, Abbasi highlighted that instability in neighbouring Afghanistan and unrest in border regions of Pakistan demand a measured and diplomatic approach. He stressed that lasting peace and development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are not just critical for the province, but also essential for national security and stability.
- Abbasi criticised recent provocative statements made by a military spokesperson, describing them as “unhelpful” in a time when institutional neutrality and public trust are vital. He urged state institutions to maintain professionalism and remain detached from political disputes, insisting that governance should be guided by constitutional norms rather than rhetoric or confrontation.
- Reflecting on recent political developments, Abbasi also took aim at the 27th Amendment, calling it a “structural blemish” on Pakistan’s governance that limits democratic expression. He warned that reforms must include public consultation and respect for the electorate’s mandate, otherwise they risk deepening political alienation instead of delivering stability.
- The former premier urged political leaders across party lines to put the national interest first, open channels of dialogue, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or draw Pakistan into unnecessary conflicts. He emphasised that politics should serve to uplift the nation, safeguard its future, and strengthen institutions — not polarise the country or provoke confrontation.
Abbasi’s remarks come at a time when Pakistan faces economic pressures, political turbulence, and governance challenges, making dialogue, diplomacy, and national unity more crucial than ever.
