RIYADH / WASHINGTON: Saudi Arabia and the United States are moving closer to finalising a landmark defence pact that could reshape the security landscape of the Middle East. The agreement, reportedly in its final stages, is expected to be announced during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s upcoming visit to the White House, as both sides push for deeper military cooperation.
According to reports, the proposed accord would commit Washington to treating any armed attack on Saudi Arabia as a potential threat to U.S. national security — mirroring the existing arrangement between the U.S. and Qatar. The pact is also expected to enhance joint efforts on intelligence-sharing, defence technology, and counter-drone capabilities, reflecting growing regional security challenges.
Analysts believe the deal is part of Washington’s strategy to solidify its presence in the Gulf at a time when Riyadh is diversifying its global partnerships. For Saudi Arabia, it marks a significant milestone in securing long-term defence assurances amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and ongoing regional tensions.
While U.S. officials have declined to confirm specific details, they described defence cooperation with Saudi Arabia as a “strong and enduring cornerstone” of America’s regional policy. The development follows Riyadh’s recent strengthening of military ties with Pakistan and other allies — signalling a broader effort to reinforce its security framework on multiple fronts.
If signed, this pact could mark a major evolution in U.S.-Saudi relations, transforming decades of strategic alignment into a formal defence commitment.
