NICE, France: In a sweeping security operation, French police detained over 100 AS Roma supporters ahead of the club’s Europa League clash in Nice, citing risks of large-scale violence. The detained fans, identified as “ultras,” were reportedly carrying weapons including brass knuckles, shovels, and iron bars, raising alarm over the potential for street battles before the high-stakes fixture.
Authorities confirmed that 101 Roma fans were taken into custody on Tuesday in the city centre. The operation, which involved more than 200 police officers, was carried out to curb unrest and ensure public safety. By Wednesday, security deployment swelled to over 400 personnel, highlighting the heightened risk assessment surrounding the match.
Officials further imposed a temporary ban on Roma fans displaying team colours—jerseys, scarves, and flags—in Nice from Tuesday afternoon until Thursday morning, a move aimed at preventing clashes between rival supporters. The game, to be played at the Allianz Riviera stadium, has been designated as high risk, with strict monitoring across access routes, public areas, and the stadium perimeter.
While no major injuries or widespread damage were reported, authorities remain wary of escalating hooliganism linked to European football. The crackdown underscores the ongoing challenge faced by law enforcement in balancing passionate fan culture with public order and safety.
