GAZA CITY – An Israeli airstrike on August 10, 2025, killed acclaimed Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif along with four of his colleagues in Gaza, Palestine, in what the network has condemned as a deliberate targeting of the press. The attack struck a reporting site near the Al-Shifa Hospital complex, where the team had been covering the intensifying conflict.
According to local officials, the strike also claimed the lives of cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, and assistant Moamen Aliwa. Two other civilians were reported killed, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven. The journalists were in a tent used as a makeshift bureau to document developments on the ground.
The Israeli military alleged that al-Sharif was linked to a Hamas cell responsible for rocket attacks, accusations firmly denied by Al Jazeera and press freedom organisations. Rights groups have warned that the incident marks another alarming escalation in the risks faced by reporters in Gaza, which has already been declared one of the most dangerous regions for journalists.
Al-Sharif was widely recognised for his vivid frontline reporting and was among the most prominent voices documenting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. His final broadcasts showed relentless bombardment and urgent appeals to the international community to remember the plight of Palestinians.
